India: India introduces first purple-fleshed potato variety

ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI) in India has developed ’Kufri Jamunia’, the first purple-fleshed potato variety tailored for Indian agricultural conditions.

This variety is characterized by its adaptability to the Indian soil and climate, particularly in the Northern, Central, and Eastern Plains. ’Kufri Jamunia’ demonstrates a robust yield potential ranging from 320-350 quintal per hectare and exhibits excellent storability under ambient conditions. The oblong-shaped potato with shallow eyes matures within 90-100 days and is distinguished by its high anthocyanin content and purple flesh.

According to Dr. Brajesh Singh, Director of ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, "Kufri Jamunia is the First-Ever Purple-Fleshed Bio-Fortified Potato Variety, which has enhanced nutrients in it in terms of antioxidants and minerals. It is understood that it shall target for food as well as nutritional security of the populations aligning with the objectives of the Indian government." This biofortified variety aims to contribute to food and nutritional security by offering elevated levels of antioxidants including 52 mg of vitamin C, and 32 mg of anthocyanins per 100-gram of fresh tuber weight. Additionally, it contains 17-19% tuber dry matter, enhancing its mealy texture and flavour, thereby making it a preferred table variety.

The development of ’Kufri Jamunia’ focused on achieving a high-yielding, medium-maturing, and late-blight resistant variety with significant nutritional value and storability. This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s objectives towards enhancing the nutritional security of its population.
