El Salvador: First Russet potato harvest in the country’s history

For the first time in the country’s agricultural history, El Salvador is producing the Russet variety of potatoes, one of the most sought-after varieties on the international market.

The country’s Russet potato production is now being sold at the Central de Abastos (Basic Market) and more than 50 AgroMarkets across the country, offering consumers and merchants the opportunity to purchase a high-quality product grown 100% on Salvadoran soil. "Five potatoes make two pounds," the official emphasized, referring to the tuber’s good size and yield.

The crops are located in areas that meet ideal conditions for this variety, including Santa Ana, Sonsonate, Arambala, Nahuaterique, Las Pilas, and other high-altitude municipalities. President Nayib Bukele’s administration has installed 730 half-block net houses as part of a push for controlled and technologically advanced production.

Domínguez assured that the strongest harvests will be harvested by the end of April and reiterated the government’s commitment to national farmers. "El Salvador can do it, and it’s proving it," he stated, anticipating that in the coming weeks, information will also be released on the phasing of other crops and the millions of pounds being harvested.

The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the country’s food sovereignty, reduce dependence on imports, and offer fresh food at competitive prices, benefiting both producers and consumers.
